...and as we head into 2015!

landscape Quliting @QuiltRoutes

It has been a funny couple of weeks, ever since learning about the EU VAT mess. Trying to decide how to proceed. Digital downloads are only a part of what I do and my heart goes out to those whose whole business is dependent on digital items.
There is a wonderful group of people here in the UK who are working really hard on everyone's behalf and have already made some progress. I have been doing my bit. I have even joined Twitter (@QuiltRoutes) which is something I never thought I would do, but that does seem the platform to use if you want to protest about something!

My solution is to stop selling digital patterns on Craftsy, Etsy and Folksy. I will be using the Payhip platform which will be compliant and allow me to carry on creating without the hassle of worrying about data collection etc.

Paper patterns, fabric and kits will still be available from Etsy and Folksy.(Until it gets introduced to physical items next year!!)

All of this could change if the powers to be have the sense to introduce a threshold for small sellers.
Lets hope so.

On a positive note I think all of this will make me focus more, help to get me more organised and push forward with other designs that have sat in the pipeline for far too long.

As I write this I have only uploaded one pattern which I share here.

What do you think?
Happy New Year and all that :D

Simple Stylized Landscape IV

Here is the last of these mini landscapes, looking a bit wonky!

Seen from this angle you can see that it is not so bad :D

When cropped it looks even better!

...and a close up of the detail.

Here is a neat and tidy mosaic of all four pieces.

...and this is how they actually look.

Simple Stylized Landscape III

Quilt Routes by Deborah O'Hare

I do like these little landscapes but have to say that as I am posting them I am seeing the faults in them.

Quilt Routes by Deborah O'Hare

That is okay though. As we do we learn and they were fun to make.
I know that some people look at all the straight line stitching in horror but I actually find it theraputic, almost zen like once I get into the rhythm :D

Quilt Routes by Deborah O'Hare

A couple of years ago at Festival of Quilts a woman came up to take a look at this piece and turned to me and said "Don't you get bored doing that?" My answer was "No!"

One more of these to come.

FRUSTRATED AND FURIOUS FABRIC FRIDAY!!!

Quilt Routes by Deborah O'Hare

This piece of fabric reflects how I am feeling today. Gloomy and out of kilter.

I want to bring to your attention the new changes in Digital VAT that comes into force on the 1st Jan 2015.

I am arriving late to the party as I only became aware of it this week, but it will effect me as I sell my patterns digitally online. It will also effect anyone that likes to buy digitally because prices will rise to cover the costs involved.

The complicated read can be found here.
However this post describes it all very well.

It impacts on anyone selling digital products to anyone in the E.U.

This has ramifications for a huge number of small micro businesses, some of whom have already decided to stop trading (see this post over at Lily's Quilts) until things become clearer or changed.

Please take the time to sign this Change.org petition if you are in the UK. It only needs a couple of hundred more signatures to to reach the 10,000 mark (make that 100,000) which means they will have to debate one aspect of it in parliament.

If you have taken the time to read this, thank you.

Simple Stylized Landscape II

Here is another mini landscape using a piece of sunset fabric.

Lots of straight line stitching/quilting.

I used a piece of synthetic fabric for contrast although it is difficult to see in the photo.

Simple Stylized Landscape I

Quilt Routes

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you will have already seen some glimpses of this back in the summer. I now have the time to share it here.

Quilt Routes

Big sky with just a few pieced elements...

...and lots and lots of quilting!!
I enjoyed the simplicity of its design and construction. Three more to come so stay tuned!

fabric friday- hand printed fabric

Quilt Routes

I pulled my Gelli Arts Plate yesterday and had a bit of a play. As you can see from the shadows in my photos it was a sunny day, nice enough to say out in my shed all morning :D

Quilt Routes

I usually paint onto white cotton but having recently purchased Lynn Krawczyk's Intentional Printing*, I have followed her example and painted onto coloured cotton.

Quilt Routes

Although I have done lots of printing on fabric before these pieces are definitely influenced by Lynn's work. I have a couple of ideas of what to do with these. Stay tuned to see what I come up with.
*I bought this book on my Kindle.
Anyone else find they are buying even more art/quilting books now that they can be purchased electronically, for a lot less than for the physical book? I know having a book in your hands is much better but it is so easy and instantaneous (and nobody has to know ;)

fabric friday hand printed fabric

hand printed fabric by Deborah O'Hare

Some thing a bit different today. This is fabric prepared for my last Journal Quilt (December) done as part of a challenge for members of the Contemporary Quilt arm of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles. The other eleven months can be seen here.

fabric friday and some updates

hand painted fabric @Quilt Routes

Today I am busy putting together some fabric kits for a workshop that I am teaching at Busy Bees tomorrow, so it's a Fabric Friday with a bit of a difference today.
I know that things have been a bit quiet here as I have had a busy few months of teaching, which is wonderful, but it does take it's toll on the ol' blogging.
I do have lots of ideas swirling around and I am looking forward to some down time so that these ideas can sort themselves out and hopefully manifest themselves into some pleasing and interesting posts.
I plan to resume my Alternative Trip Around the Block series. Remember that? Plus a few tutorials that I hope you will like.
I haven't been totally idle as I have been producing my Journal Quilts for the Contemporary Group, making some small stitched pieces and I have been critiquing my working practices when trying to produce an Art Quilt.
