<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally!!! I am ready to tell you about the workshops that I will be running in 2020.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one is on the 27th and 28th of March. It will take place in a local village hall situated under 10 minutes away from the wonderful Heritage Coast which I am fortunate enough to call home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is called The Wild and Windy Sea and it will be run over two days. The first day will be devoted to fabric painting and the next day will be spent making your own sea inspired piece from the fabric you have created.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">While I have taught fabric painting workshops to many groups both at home and abroad, rather than just giving an overview of making fabrics for landscapes, my aim is to be able to spend time looking at different subjects in more detail. In this instance that</span><span style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.51px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> means focusing on the techniques and designs that depict the movement, depth and colour of the sea and the landscape around it.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To finish, I want to thank all of you who saw my flyer about these workshops back in August at the Festival of Quilts. I was thrilled and humbled by the response. I know that the details have been a long time coming but what can I say. I had not long booked the dates and couldn't pass up the opportunity of advertising them at the show, even though I had not nailed down the final details. Other commitments and life in general has got in the way of me sitting down and spending the time needed of the computer to tell you all about them but now that it has been done I am enjoying spending time creating samples and really getting my teeth into the topic so stay tuned for some sneak peeks.</div>

While I attempt to get myself organized after the Festival of Quilts, and try to enjoy what is left of the summer, here are a few more of my scrap busting landscapes. These have all been done with the feed dogs up. Although the photos don't show it acurately they are all the same size of roughly 5 in square.</div>

I am excited to be able to tell you about a new workshop that I will be giving this Autumn. It will take place in <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dyffryn-gardens" target="_blank">Duffryn Gardens</a> which is a National Trust property in the Vale of Glamorgan. The class will be held in the Cory Education Centre which is a suburb purpose built classroom that they have on site. The property is situated on the western outskirts of Cardiff and is very easily reached from the M4 motorway.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It takes place on Saturday 19th October 2019. </div>

A quick post to share with you the first of my scrap busting mini pieces that I introduced in my last post. I am having a lot of fun with these. They are a good warm up exercise before I get down to important stitching. I try and have the next one all planned out and ready to go after each finish. This makes it easier to sit down at the machine the next day and get straight to it. At the moment they are machine stitched but I am hoping to incorporate some hand stitching, at some point, when the time allows. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All but number 8 were done with the feed dogs down.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back in 2012 I set myself a task to use up all the scraps that I had collected into one smallish brown paper bag. Little did I know then that it would be the start of something quite big for me in that not long after completing the project I was was asked to give a talk about it at my local branch of the Quilters Guild. I have since given that talk 'Tales From My Scrap Bag' to many guilds and groups around the country. It is a talk that has grown over the years, with other scrap busting projects being added to it, and I have to confess that I do quite enjoy seeing how it fires others up into wanting to go home and tackle their scrap piles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD1e4nnFwDR-eRtoZi5_NRDcGTsU-4W3mwO8Rhp6BbHo5V-IXqw0nBebTZyZcp8jSMrppoTaXGiLf8qK0yIE9RZgkE719jmJKEsQW7sRrlsOR6Zq1IUcJ_GxHPTfM4KIa2Vl7vtO8NM_BF/s1600/fabric-drawer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Deborah O'Hare" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD1e4nnFwDR-eRtoZi5_NRDcGTsU-4W3mwO8Rhp6BbHo5V-IXqw0nBebTZyZcp8jSMrppoTaXGiLf8qK0yIE9RZgkE719jmJKEsQW7sRrlsOR6Zq1IUcJ_GxHPTfM4KIa2Vl7vtO8NM_BF/s640/fabric-drawer.jpg" title="scrap drawer" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Which brings me on to my latest self imposed challenge. This drawer is from a small cabinet with five such drawers stuffed with scraps. I have literally been stuffing scraps into it for years and although the intention was so that I would always have somewhere to find that perfect little piece to use in some project or other, the truth is that I can count on one hand the times that I have actually done that instead of just painting what I needed. My plan is to use the fabric in these drawers to make small, quick little pieces. At the moment they are roughly 6 x 6 inch landscapes and I try and restrict myself to no more than three, sometimes less, thread colours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some of the pieces are in strips and some of the pieces have shapes already cut out of them which I try to incorporate, rather that change. Hence the very large fir tree and some strange looking mountains you can see in some of the pieces above. Some of the pieces have fusible on, most do not.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Roughly the colours in each one are greens, blues, pinks/purples, yellows/oranges/reds, blacks/browns</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQss-Xn2enTztkjinzUw7ECbhj2X4DdLLwLEocv1XNLnTTk1Y7Df87kfVoBGxMG_R4xNDlnY5BxnF8UkhjZCyK4PNId4yBKafTVsFWBYs34ZRmWKsgEWG8JTd0tCwPwgaRZSo-VnXeG4_D/s1600/%25231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Deborah O'Hare" border="0" data-original-height="1599" data-original-width="1600" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQss-Xn2enTztkjinzUw7ECbhj2X4DdLLwLEocv1XNLnTTk1Y7Df87kfVoBGxMG_R4xNDlnY5BxnF8UkhjZCyK4PNId4yBKafTVsFWBYs34ZRmWKsgEWG8JTd0tCwPwgaRZSo-VnXeG4_D/s640/%25231.jpg" title="#1" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the first before I trimmed it down. My machine was set up for free motion so that is what I did on this piece and I am going with that as a rule. To sew with feed dogs up or down, however the machine is set up at that time. I have already got into a sort of rhythm. I am trying to do at least one a day. When I have completed one I pull out some more scraps so that the next one is already planned ready to go the next time I sit at my machine. This serves as a way of warming up for what ever else I am planning to sew.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The thumbnail sketches were done so that I have a quick reference for something to do and were copied from sketchbook pages I originally did in a sketchbook that actually became part of the 'Tales From My Scrap Bag' project. I have already begun other thumbnail ideas for when I have exhausted this one.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, she says blowing the cobwebs away from my last blog post, I did complete the 2018 Journal Quilt challenge. I first did it in 2014 and it is still my favourite of all that I did. I did it again in 2015, and even though these made it into my book, I got the least from it because in all honesty I thought I was being clever by simply repeating things I had already done but they just became a chore and I wasn't learning anything from the experience. 2016 was a miss because of said book. 2017 was more enjoyable but with some mixed results. That brings us to 2018 and below you will find Nov and Dec's offering which I didn't get around to sharing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of the Journal Quit challenges I have done were completed using scraps and or stash with the exception of the first in 2014. </div>

I prefer a close up of Dec's which was done using a piece of experimental Gelli Plate printed fabric. I fine the back more interesting than the front on this one.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So maybe, maybe not, you are wondering why I have not joined the 2019 Quilters Guild Contemporary Group Journal Quilt challenge?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well as much as I enjoy taking part they are quite strict about submitting your pieces on time, which is every 4 months. This is totally understandable and I always find it fine at the beginning of the year but not so much as I get busier, especially around August. Yet I still like the idea of these challenges to make something small. Something that encourages playfulness, as well as practice, without the need to be perfect. I am always inspired by the many such challenges that appear on Instagram such as the #100dayschallenge but I now have enough self knowledge to know that the type of commitment needed for that is not for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that brings me back to the start of this post. This self imposed challenge project has no time restrictions which means I can dip in and out of it when I can and I can also change the rules. At the moment I am doing landscapes, but that might change, who knows!?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have included a few links here should you wish to to see any of the other projects mentioned in this post.</div>

Looking at this image now the thought 'What was I thinking?' comes to mind. Bearing in mind that this close up shows up the details in a way that the naked eye couldn't see I decided that this floral offering for October was too blah and needed a bit of brightening up. I will let you judge the results!</div>

I set to with a number or colours in pencil and crayon without much success.<br />

<br />
I don't really think that my efforts were worth my while but the whole point of these journal quilts is to use the opportunity to play and experiment.<br />

Having tried this sort of thing before on other pieces that I haven't needed to share, what I have learnt is not to do this again! LOL!<br />

<br />
As you can see there are quite a collection of my floral inspired journal quilts now, and I have kept to my self imposed challenge to only use fabrics I already have. No painting new pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicRI65fDljEo7M_j2VHFk7jA_MU341KOgXEzPThVmf_jeL_4enDu0ADLAM1fKQDNhS7LkAG877P2Utz2K2GRDl3yOxv14DHNE5tWMIKPAJQTYw-POBXuNygFYT8KJW_hbEBqDxHGDQyp3/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1445" data-original-width="1600" height="578" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicRI65fDljEo7M_j2VHFk7jA_MU341KOgXEzPThVmf_jeL_4enDu0ADLAM1fKQDNhS7LkAG877P2Utz2K2GRDl3yOxv14DHNE5tWMIKPAJQTYw-POBXuNygFYT8KJW_hbEBqDxHGDQyp3/s640/2.jpg" title="September JQ" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For this month I was inspired to try some all over free motion quilting. I am in awe of the workmanship that you can see daily if you follow the hashtag <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/freemotionquilting/" target="_blank">#freemotionquilting</a> over on Instagram or Facebook. Admittedly a lot of these are done on longarm machines but there many quilters out there doing beautiful work on domestic machines.<br />

<br />
After a busy busy time I just wanted to sit with some hand stitching, so this is my offering for August's JQ. It was done on a piece of fabric that I had sun printed a long time ago. It was not hugely successful, as the floral prints which were done using Mallow from the garden, came out quite pale.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmb9XMcPU0jZKboYo7KUAsO1sVXiRluHncLwCJyr-tjG60demoy95wCNSDj1psTKPE-KOSooYyo5ysX08kWGAmrGmL37RGQFYD90m44wPIpwbq3FG_YZ0bQo6lUYc5JALG-YrrPSP6AyVj/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmb9XMcPU0jZKboYo7KUAsO1sVXiRluHncLwCJyr-tjG60demoy95wCNSDj1psTKPE-KOSooYyo5ysX08kWGAmrGmL37RGQFYD90m44wPIpwbq3FG_YZ0bQo6lUYc5JALG-YrrPSP6AyVj/s640/2.jpg" title="August Journal Quilts" width="640" /></a></div>
I simply followed the petal shapes with big straight stitch and put some french knots in the centres.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, once I had finished I found some other sun printed fabric that would have been better to use as the prints were stronger, but Hey Ho!</div>

I have just delivered the pieces that will be on display at The Quilt Association's Summer Exhibition, 'Welsh Connections'. I had wanted it all to be new work but in the end I had to include some older pieces because after my little accident last year I simply lost the time that I was planning to spend on them. There will be photos eventually!<br />

<br />
This JQ has been done on a piece of fabric that I painted with normal acrylic paint a long time ago and if memory serves me correctly I was just using up paint that was left over from something else and I wanted to see how they would feel on fabric. It feels good to finally put it to use.<br />
<br />

It looks better vertically than the correct horizontal format but I am just pleased that I managed to get it done on time. Now I can get on with my final preparations for Festival of Quilts which is just over a week away.</div>

I find it hard to keep up with the JQ's at what is for me a very busy time of year. It is making me question whether I will partake again. Instead, set my own led challenge which will be a bit more flexible. Having said that perhaps I need to first complete <a href="http://quiltroutes.blogspot.com/search/label/Alternative%20Trip%20Around%20the%20Block" target="_blank">this</a> as I only got as far as May and I was enjoying it before I had to move on to other things.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This months offering comes from a fat quarter painted a while ago when I was given a suede effect paint to try. I isolated some of the motifs and cut out and fused some other to fit the 7 x 9 inch format. You can see some of the inconsistencies in the paint and it would be tricky to use a sewing machine to stitch anywhere near or around these motifs which s probably why it has languished in my pile of fabrics for such along time, and why it is all hand stitched.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So after saying after last months JQ that I stopped myself from doing more hand stitching because of time constraints I spent this month doing nothing but that. It was done on a piece of cloth that has been languishing in a quiet corner for a long time, calling to me with it's pretty colours.</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The white circles that I added are not very perceptible in these images but they acted as my guides in this slow stitched project.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here is my April JQ. Shown at various angles!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcxjLdciFSb1G0q0aeQ-ORfoigZ1iSXJ1b6QrN2PnY_wauqVyotPvGQKvirV-NWxcUCbqO4pEwoTIKzXwO1NptPLn2sJS12tnDO6FOoYPGLRfj8Bi5EHwiQ2Ij1WMLpaAnPOxWgtyixLps/s1600/blog-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1451" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcxjLdciFSb1G0q0aeQ-ORfoigZ1iSXJ1b6QrN2PnY_wauqVyotPvGQKvirV-NWxcUCbqO4pEwoTIKzXwO1NptPLn2sJS12tnDO6FOoYPGLRfj8Bi5EHwiQ2Ij1WMLpaAnPOxWgtyixLps/s640/blog-2.jpg" title="April JQ" width="580" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used some fabric that has been languishing in my stash for a while and used the design of the wood block that I had stamped on the fabric as inspiration for the flower motif.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNI27sgir_FNwXcBAhFW4wVR5ezL_C5sfNJLgLPcPg_NHaXnxOJgXJ4tXPaDJC2x5PA8hqjnSoW2BNhLI5gubrPSCgff4WcsbifYN5axjf2UwQ3EQjIVBG1xTZekhM4vtOMb7uE0Q7uqiS/s1600/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1278" data-original-width="1600" height="510" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNI27sgir_FNwXcBAhFW4wVR5ezL_C5sfNJLgLPcPg_NHaXnxOJgXJ4tXPaDJC2x5PA8hqjnSoW2BNhLI5gubrPSCgff4WcsbifYN5axjf2UwQ3EQjIVBG1xTZekhM4vtOMb7uE0Q7uqiS/s640/blog3.jpg" title="April JQ" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My biggest problem when doing these pieces is keeping things quick. I so wanted to spend time adding more stitching to this one but with others things to attend to the discipline is to treat it for what it is. A chance to try out new ideas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those in charge of this challenge are quite strict about the deadlines of April, then August and of course December. So I have just snuck this one in. Here are my first batch of four altogether.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In an attempt to get up to date here is my February offering for the CQGB JQ challenge. Writing this post has made it clear why blogs have been on the decline in favour of other social media. It has taken me so long to get this done when it is so much easier to put one photo on Instagram.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDDR9BXq15kyuaOrSWqttCtiJQof01JsQLC4awUsCnm5YYQuj-JzNPR9byAaBRzDqTxL7VHxsRCzBo9-LGfuw0SwQnl_OoxgbJBkS3t464N78zvN0tIjqUrko2ZnJ3Xbna7EpRxXFFxeO-/s1600/Blog-Feb.2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1273" data-original-width="1600" height="509" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDDR9BXq15kyuaOrSWqttCtiJQof01JsQLC4awUsCnm5YYQuj-JzNPR9byAaBRzDqTxL7VHxsRCzBo9-LGfuw0SwQnl_OoxgbJBkS3t464N78zvN0tIjqUrko2ZnJ3Xbna7EpRxXFFxeO-/s640/Blog-Feb.2.jpg" title="Feb JQ" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is not because I am trying to create some airbrushed, false account of what I am doing but because even if the piece I am showing is not successful I still want the image that shows that to be clear. I try my best with my limited skills, a smart phone and some photo editing software to show bright, clear photos. Sometimes it all comes together quickly, others not so much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiobkdsSGkqsPuh_VFhtM5QHUWD4GHPziDUDzjqDw4Roqcsbo0hohYstVYimqMFC6YyUTSj9QzDD7iNJnRNO2MWGvonZURd7BcVxHxV30POKsS82Ak4kzAV8vzmob7YdVqV3BX_mVN-e6XD/s1600/Blog-Feb.3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1306" data-original-width="1600" height="522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiobkdsSGkqsPuh_VFhtM5QHUWD4GHPziDUDzjqDw4Roqcsbo0hohYstVYimqMFC6YyUTSj9QzDD7iNJnRNO2MWGvonZURd7BcVxHxV30POKsS82Ak4kzAV8vzmob7YdVqV3BX_mVN-e6XD/s640/Blog-Feb.3.jpg" title="Feb JQ's" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't like that the background to this image has come out yellow despite the fact that in reality it is white. I also don't like the fact that to my naked eye this piece looked straight but the camera shows that not to be the case!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes though you just have to let things go and move on. The more time I spend fussing over photos the less time I get to sew. The truth is that this piece looked a lot better in my head than it does in reality but like with all these JQ's I have learnt from the process and it will help me improve.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last month I was teaching at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/propercraftylaunceston/posts/748955431960119" target="_blank">Proper Crafty in Launceston</a> Cornwall and want to share with you some of the amazing pieces that were created during the week that I was there. Forgive the photos for not being a bit better but it's not always possible to take great shots in these circumstances.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSwgoV-pnxABChAamJYddAsBe8ThVgX35O9kqA112GoULpHhEanXgqR6fWZ9HLwjr5gyHvzGF5zuMR9GNK-OHglhj4WBMRkFeRQcF9oTlQ3qB1uGU9yezH4hjPk6cqfOMujOjvMspAbtSd/s1600/others.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSwgoV-pnxABChAamJYddAsBe8ThVgX35O9kqA112GoULpHhEanXgqR6fWZ9HLwjr5gyHvzGF5zuMR9GNK-OHglhj4WBMRkFeRQcF9oTlQ3qB1uGU9yezH4hjPk6cqfOMujOjvMspAbtSd/s400/others.jpg" title="Birgittas Puffin, Lisbeth's Seagulls and Karin's Meerkat" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was thrilling that while at <a href="http://quiltroutes.blogspot.co.uk/2017/11/art-quilting.html" target="_blank">Crafty Retreats in France</a> last summer, four wonderful Swedish ladies made the journey to come and work with me. I was completely humbled that they chose to do so again and travelled to Cornwall to build on what they had learnt last year and produce quilts of their own designs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPz2FszXWusnXgSrdyLAlLgYhvZWACvS8ppWcTYRATpePDm0K9sG-UIk-nVymRvIgr-x1FGnKZ0AcFs50Bu6y6KYMd8RUwmSZjTfPFobDdCxLJeDV2ihQ12LOxs1102p7UAxPCuSgV9yk0/s1600/seahorse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPz2FszXWusnXgSrdyLAlLgYhvZWACvS8ppWcTYRATpePDm0K9sG-UIk-nVymRvIgr-x1FGnKZ0AcFs50Bu6y6KYMd8RUwmSZjTfPFobDdCxLJeDV2ihQ12LOxs1102p7UAxPCuSgV9yk0/s400/seahorse.jpg" title="Lena's Seahorses" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love all of them but must confess to having a sweet spot for Karin's Meerkat and I am also very impressed by Lena's double sided Seahorse quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2POxI5SRkm5OKugvrCDqquG1D2lJX9Yg8vlYUSnRDXub-rIYLjA295WQT44DjZcmfDaZWKzOimSkCZzzlI3fEKjlHJ1X3nyBa0nEOwp940vzLkT0lZvz1AzXtRqAXpsVYVNPRJd-2uFjX/s1600/hare-x-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2POxI5SRkm5OKugvrCDqquG1D2lJX9Yg8vlYUSnRDXub-rIYLjA295WQT44DjZcmfDaZWKzOimSkCZzzlI3fEKjlHJ1X3nyBa0nEOwp940vzLkT0lZvz1AzXtRqAXpsVYVNPRJd-2uFjX/s400/hare-x-4.jpg" title="a kindle of hares" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course there were another band of hares to delight. 'Band' being one of the thirteen collective nouns that I have discovered that describe a group of hares. A particular favourite of mine is 'kindle' but 'leap', 'mute' and 'flick' can also be used. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So with thanks to all who came on this and other retreats let me finish by reminding you that there is still time to <a href="http://quiltroutes.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/small-art-quilts_9.html" target="_blank">enter my giveway before a winner is announced on Friday</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until next time...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week I spent some time answering questions for an interview feature about my <a href="http://quiltroutes.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/small-art-quilts.html" target="_blank">NEW BOOK!!</a> (just in case you missed it 😊).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the questions asked was about what is coming next. My truthful answer is that I am looking forward to time at home with my sewing machine, doing some important stuff, but also having some fun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With that in mind I have joined the Contemporary Quilt Groups Journal Quilt Challenge again. Not having done it last year it seems a good way to get into a routine of playing and experimentation. </div>

In 2015 I used up fabric from my stash to do some landscape triptychs. Confession time, I thought I was being clever doing one piece that I split into three but I was only cheating myself because I was just covering old ground and as a result the process was not as satisfying as the year before. They can be seen<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/quiltroutes/albums/72157691055505922/with/40598025251/" target="_blank"> here. </a></div>

This year the format is 7 x 9 inches with your own set theme.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Florals is the theme I have chosen. It is just as much about the design of the motifs as it is about the technique used. So here is Jan's offering and I can say that Feb and March are already done so look out for those.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It feels good to finally tell you all about my new book Small Art Quilts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why small? ...because working small allows you to play and experiment and try out lots of things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Besides which the techniques that I use and are exactly the same no matter what size I am working on.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP1D0-rNrqJ7BWUnJJJdJYdwd6VRu8Gpr9-lVf1g7UcdechuM2uufiM1DJ_IHgf0sE5GomvYX6n0JRJAbWZF7lokypV891rqaw6AFiQcpBjYrEGZ7wXDtsGi97fquV2H6PoN5eYBYoWo8e/s1600/web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Quilt Routes" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP1D0-rNrqJ7BWUnJJJdJYdwd6VRu8Gpr9-lVf1g7UcdechuM2uufiM1DJ_IHgf0sE5GomvYX6n0JRJAbWZF7lokypV891rqaw6AFiQcpBjYrEGZ7wXDtsGi97fquV2H6PoN5eYBYoWo8e/s640/web.jpg" title="hand painted fabric" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Naturally there is a comprehensive section on fabric painting with step by step instructions, followed by descriptions on building the quilt backgrounds, adding focal elements, machine quilting, hand stitching and a lot more. Naturally if you don't wish to paint your fabric you can skip over that section and create from whatever fabrics you choose to use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have put everything into this book and it if you have ever wanted to do a workshop with me but couldn't this is the next best thing.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is a technique based book with only two complete project 'How To's' which come at the end. Having said that a number of the focal element templates are also included should you be inspired to create any of the other quilts yourself using the techniques demonstrated.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last July I returned to Crafty Retreats in France where another lovely group of ladies joined me for a week of painting, stitching and eating. 😊 This time the wonderful ladies who travelled to work with me came from the U.S.A and Sweden, along with a few Brits from England, Scotland and Wales.</div>

(Click on the image to scroll through the selection.) I will be back at Crafty Retreats in <a href="http://www.craftyretreats.com/2018-courses" target="_blank">France</a> and <a href="http://www.craftyretreats.com/2018-courses-cornwall" target="_blank">Cornwall</a> next year, and again in 2019.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In August I was back at the N.E.C. in Birmingham for the Festival of Quilts, ably assisted by daughter. I love this piece that she did for the Portrait Shuffle gallery.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the rest of the time I have had my head down <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Textile-Artist-Quilts-Explorations-Stitch/dp/178221450X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510839137&sr=8-1&keywords=small+art+quilts" target="_blank">writing a book, due out March next year.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has been a long process and one that took up any time left after giving talks and workshops and general family commitments. I take my hat off to those stellar people who seem to be able to keep all their social media balls in the air while doing everything else. I have never been one of those people who is blessed with huge amounts of energy and so something has to give. That coupled with the fact that I couldn't really share with you the things I was working on meant that things have been very quiet here. Obviously, more about the book to come but in the meantime here is a close up of something I did while in France.</div>

Oh, also add the fact that I dislocated my elbow at the beginning of September which has meant that I am slower getting back into the swing of things than I had initially planned. I have been keeping my arm moving with a bit of E.P.P. though, along with some help from the physio.</div>

I know blogging has taken a back seat with the rise of other platforms but I am very fond of my blog space. It has opened up a whole world to me that I would never have imagined possible. It has also allowed me to forge friendships and for these things I am truy grateful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

So if you thought that I had abandoned this space you would be wrong, and if you have taken the time to read this post I thank you.</div>

This is where you could find me last week. Teaching at <a href="http://www.craftyretreats.com/" target="_blank">Crafty Retreats</a> in the Limousin region of France. The building in the foreground is where we ate the most delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and I got to sleep in that beautiful house you see in the distance.</div>

I might not do anything at all with them as for me the enjoyment of these has been in the actual making and not so much in the finished item, which is probably why I prefer the close up shots of the stitching.<br />

They would however, make a good addition to my <a href="http://quiltroutes.blogspot.co.uk/p/workshops-and-talk.html" target="_blank">'Tales from the Scrap Bag'</a> because I have kept to my guns and only used up fabric I already have, not painting up anything new. So I probably will finish the edges somehow.</div>

I am slightly ahead of the game because I have pieced the remaining four months contributions and they are now waiting to be stitched. I do have a very long to do list at the moment so they will probably stay this until about the last week in December!!</div>
