...and finally...for this piece anyway.

art quilting

Last time I was waiting for inspiration to strike. It did in that curved horizon reminded me of a view I see often on a road that takes me out of the city to the coast where I live. It is semi rural with nice views, but this one particular scene always catches my eye and if there was somewhere to stop I would have taken a photo by now. I have attempted to get my daughter to try and get one while hanging out of the car window, but to no avail.
So you can see the I did a sketch from memory and proceeded to get the basic shape cut out of fabric.

The view is of a derelict building. It always looks different, depending on the time of day or time of year. I added some shading with a fabric pen.

I "thread painted" foliage, roof tiles etc and I changed the shape of the entrance when I realised it was looking too much like a dog kennel!

I am not overly happy with the extra stitching that I put on the bottom, and I may chop that off.

'Til next time!

...and next...

art quilting

Carrying on from my last post I want to show you a close up of the sheers that I have put over the fabric strips. (Both  of which were in the bag for some reason, honest!)

art quilting

Here is another close up to show you how the lines of stitching flatten all the strips of fabric down. The green has been done, and now I need to do the sky area.

art quilting

Background stitching done. I just need to come up with a finished design, as that is the way I am working with this scrap busting. Preparing a background with what I've got, and then seeing what it "says" to me.
Hope you come back to find out what this one says :)

Another scrap bag project.

art quilting

I have done four pieces now yet I still have this pile left.

art quilting

Time to do some scrappy layering I think!

art quilting

It really couldn't be easier.
You can be as random as you like, as all the untidiness gets sorted when the layers of sheers get added.
This is the technique I demonstrated when I did a Poppy Field workshop and this is another take on it. What to do with it? Well the first step is to stitch everything down and I will show you that next time.

Embellisher background #3

art quilting

The colours in this background put me in mind of some recent sketches of whimsical trees.

I chose some more bits from the scrap bag...

...and fused on some tree shapes...

...AFTER.. I had utilised the computerised stitches on my sewing machine. (Oops! I forgot to take a photo of that stage!)

art quilting

Some thread painting covered up the brown fabric that wasn't dark enough for my taste.

That's four pieces done and I don't think I am even halfway through that one small bag yet!

Bloggers' Quilt Festival Spring 2012

If you have arrived here from the Bloggers' Quilt Festival, hello and welcome, I am glad to see you here.

bunting quilt

There is quite a long convaluting story to how this quilt came to be. I am primarily an art quilter and this type of quilt  with all it's straight lines and matching points is not my ususal style.

However, somewhere along my creative travels I felt that had to be a way of doing a pieced Bunting block, that had movement to it.

That is the short version but I really hope you take a look this post "It started with this" to see the long version.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks to Amy.
Hope you visit again soon.

Embellished background #2

art quilting

I had initially thought that I was going to use this piece vertically, but the colours and markings reminded me of some small designs tucked away in a C&G sketchbook.

First some straight line stitching, and then on with the free motion foot.

art quilting

The edge of the foot acts as a guide to get equal distances on the fence posts.

art quilting

I haven't decided how to finish this one off yet. Any suggestions?

Embellisher background #1

art quilting

The colours in this one remind me of the Red Centre of Australia.

art quilting

Onto tissue paper, I sketched the outline of an aboriginal carving that I have from a trip to Ayers Rock.

art quilting

I had made the drawing too long so I pinned it to make it shorter.

art quilting

Here it is taking shape.

The residual bits of tissue can be removed easily with some sticky tape.

Once the tissue has been removed I can get stuck into the stitching.

art quilting

More stitching and a outline.

art quilting

Some spirals finish it off.
