Painting Sunsets

landscape fabric

An order for some sunset sky fabrics meant making the most of the brief holiday sunshine and getting the job done this weekend.

Of course there was paint left over so I painted some more!

Despite the many sunsets I have painted, I have rarely used the fabric in my own work, apart from this sample piece.

Some of these are now for sale in the shop, with more being added as the week goes on.

I would like some more sunshine please!

Stitching Showcase

A big thank you to Georgina at The Quilt Association, for inviting me to teach at The Minerva Arts Centre yesterday. I taught Stitching Showcase and had a lovely time.
It was a two and a half hour drive, one way, into the heart of Wales, but any day that I get to drive through the Brecon Beacons is a good day in my book.
(if you follow the last link you can see the new look Flickr, that seems to be causing a lot of upset at the moment. If you happen to be a non Pro member I would love to know what you think of the Ads... before I make any changes to my subscription)

What would you do.......

...with these?

There is a lot of flotsam and jetsam along the estuary at the moment. I collected this pile this morning.
I was first attracted to the 'red' twig as it is not the usual colour of drift wood.
As I looked closer I started to see just how much there was washed up along the estuary.
Now I won't get started on all the junk that gets either washed up from the sea, or washed down the river but instead ask the question, "How would these finds inspire you?"

I am drawn to the natural objects, the twigs and shells and mermaids purse, plus what looks like a bit of coconut shell. I'd like to think it arived here from tropical shores, although it more likely came via the nearest supermarket.

Having said that I am also intrigued by how attractive even plastic and man made products become once they have been weather worn. I have often picked up bits like this thinking that I might use them one day.

When it comes down to it, I don't find myself ever sketching these things or attaching bits to any of my work, but I am drawn to them just the same.

How about you, would you get out your sketching tools or do you like to incorporate found items in your pieces? Or something else perhaps?
I'd like to know!

Coiled Fabric Wrapped Bowl.

I have finally got around to using up some of the fabric selvedge pile, first mentioned here.
I am loving the way the differences in "black" show themselves when they are all put together.
You are only seeing it from this angle because I am not overly happy with the finish, but that will be rectified when I find some nice black beads to embellish/cover up with.
My plan is to put together a big rainbow one with all the other colour strips. This technique really eats them up quickly which is good as I am on a mission to USE STUFF UP!!!

Just type 'coiled fabric wrapped basket/bowl' into your search engine if you fancy making one.

Festival Of Quilts Workshop

I have put together a new class for the Festival of Quilts.

I knew that my usual fabric painting classes would be a bit of a no no without easy access to water and sinks
but I still wanted to do a class that reflected my love of painting on fabric.

So I have put together "Picture it With Paint" which will explore how to put together a number of textile landscape scenes and how to utilise fabric paint, along with a few other bits and pieces, in order to make that process easier.

We will also be looking at how we can take the same designs and produce them in a different way.

This is a non stitching class. All the work done on the day is about preparing the pieces prior to stitching but never fear there will be plenty of discussion and samples of how pieces can be stitched during the class.
I have taken this approach because I want people who are attending the festival to be able to just roll up without too much worry about lugging along lots of supplies.
Or follow this link to the Festival of Quilts new website.
I am totally thrilled to have been invited to teach at the year's festival.
My class is on Saturday 10th August and for the rest of the show I will be on my booth in the Quilting in Action section.
Hope to see you there!
