What would you do.......

...with these?

There is a lot of flotsam and jetsam along the estuary at the moment. I collected this pile this morning.
I was first attracted to the 'red' twig as it is not the usual colour of drift wood.
As I looked closer I started to see just how much there was washed up along the estuary.
Now I won't get started on all the junk that gets either washed up from the sea, or washed down the river but instead ask the question, "How would these finds inspire you?"

I am drawn to the natural objects, the twigs and shells and mermaids purse, plus what looks like a bit of coconut shell. I'd like to think it arived here from tropical shores, although it more likely came via the nearest supermarket.

Having said that I am also intrigued by how attractive even plastic and man made products become once they have been weather worn. I have often picked up bits like this thinking that I might use them one day.

When it comes down to it, I don't find myself ever sketching these things or attaching bits to any of my work, but I am drawn to them just the same.

How about you, would you get out your sketching tools or do you like to incorporate found items in your pieces? Or something else perhaps?
I'd like to know!

  1. I love it when I find fun things on the beach, once we found a nice buoy while paddling in maine. I wish I had thought to get driftwood, I would like to use some as a base for wood cutouts of mermaids for my bathroom. I collect special stones and shells and put them in baskets in the bathroom.

  2. Well the red white and blue piece which I think might be the plastic piece. Looks like a stencil of a bird in flight to me.......

  3. What a great resource the sea's edge is! Great collection of textures and shapes - I wouldn't do one thing with all, but different things with each! Sketching some, stitching some, using some for collograph and stencil and I would beat my husband on the bottom with the sticks - just for fun!!

  4. I always go beachcombing on whatever beach I'm on but most particularly at St Ives. Consequently I have several small boxes of beach finds including sea glass. I always intend to make them into a mobile or maybe weave the more flexible pieces into a hanging but so far they are still sitting in their boxes. I have used a few pieces of sea glass in some stitched pieces but that's it.

  5. I must admit, I am also drawn to the natural objects. the second photo is a lovely still life, and would make a beautiful artwork in itself. I wish I could give you some wonderfully creative answer, but I am also trying to figure out how to incorporate natural objects into my work. I believe I am definitely headed in the direction of mixed-media. Best of luck on whatever you decide. I'm sure it will be interesting and beautiful.

  6. If I had a beach hut I would make a mobile for it with these.
