not so modern a quilt block

Alternative Trip Around the Block by Quilt Routes

The last time I talked about my Alternative Trip Around the Block. I had completed the Modern Frame Log Cabin block. I made two variations and inspired by slow stitching and by my increasing enjoyment of hand stitching I decided to put the two blocks together and do a bit of kantha stitching...

...and give bit of a nod to Japanese Boro stitching.

The thing is all of this stitching has drastically changed the size and shape of this block and for a while I was pondering how I was going to bring it to 12 x 12 inches.

But then I thought the whole point of doing this is to have some fun and see where it takes me and that is when I decided to over stitch by hand around the whole block.
I will share the whole block when I have finished.
I could be here a while!

**This is part of my own personal challenge to create and learn a bit more about traditional quilt blocks while adding my own twist, as described here. I am following the free Block of the Month classes on Craftsy as my guide.

  1. I love how the stitching looks with the fabrics you used.
I would like to just make some small pieces for fun and see where it takes me.

  2. There's something about the hand stitching that just makes me want to reach out and touch it. I am in awe of the Japanese Boro style, and this is a beautiful nod to that tradition. I look forward to seeing how it turns out :)

  3. Very nice. I've been drawn to handstitching lately. Not actually doing it, but admiring it. Do you use regular embroidery floss for this or some other specialty thread?
